In six weeks you learn to run an EKG machine and read what it prints. The program includes a 100-hour internship with local healthcare providers.

The exam
You can take the certification exam online with the National Healthcareer Association, or in person with MedCA.

Most earn between $42,000 and $54,000 a year, or about $20 to $26 an hour, depending on where they work.
Where it leads
The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects these jobs to grow 3% over the next ten years. From here you can train further as a cardiovascular technologist or a telemetry technician.
